A film about looking at where you came from and learning how to comprehend it and what you do with it. When Marnie Was There is quite possibly the most emotionally destructive cinematic experience I have ever had. I was so moved by the soundtrack that I managed to learn both Anna and Marnie's own themes on the piano. The soundtrack was also just as moving as Anna and Marnie's character arcs, it fit so well with the nature of both character's situations at certain parts of the film. When Marnie Was There (Japanese:, Hepburn: Omoide no Mn, 'Marnie of My Memories') is a 2014 Japanese anime drama film written and directed by Hiromasa Yonebayashi, produced by Studio Ghibli for Nippon Television Network, Dentsu, Hakuhodo DYMP, Walt Disney Japan, Mitsubishi, Toho and KDDI and distributed by Toho. But for that matter, the animation in all of the later Studio Ghibli films look beautiful.

There were several moments where I almost began to break down into tears, it was literally like this film was made for me.Īesthetically the film is absolutely gorgeous to look at, the scenery and the colours all look so exquisite, it is unbelievable such artists are capable of creating some of the greatest hand-drawn images I have ever seen. Like Anna, I've always been a quiet person and most of the time I don't think it's a great thing. Anna is someone I can relate to on a personal level, no I'm not adopted, nor a great sketcher or struggle to accept the unknown parts of my family history, but her loneliness and the way she expresses her self-hatred is something I can strongly understand and empathise for. Just about everything in this wonderful Studio Ghibli piece is as close to perfect and almost speaks to me. Words cannot describe the destruction this film had put on me. She comes across a huge house known as the Marsh House, she becomes obsessed with it and meets a mysterious girl named Marnie. One day, she is advised by her doctor to spend time away from home with some family friends along the coast, because it would be good for her health. Anna is not like any other girl, she's quiet, lonely, depressed and also suffers from asthma.
